Tips on Home Cooling

Buying a bigger room air conditioner won’t necessarily make you feel more comfortable during the hot summer months. In fact, a room air conditioner that’s too big for the area it is supposed to cool will perform less efficiently and less effectively than a smaller, properly sized unit. The reason: an oversized unit will cool the room(s) to the thermostat set-point before proper dehumidification occurs, making the area feel “clammy” and uncomfortable. Central air-conditioning systems need to be sized by professionals. Explore our Energy Saver 101 infographic on home cooling to learn how an air conditioner works.

Progressive Heating and Air

If you have a central air system in your home, set the fan to shut off at the same time as the compressor, which is usually done by setting the “auto” mode on the fan setting. In other words, don’t use the system’s central fan to provide air circulation — use circulating fans in individual rooms.

Instead of air-conditioning, consider installing a whole-house fan. Whole-house fans work in many climates and help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air through the attic. Use the fan most effectively to cool down your house during cooler times of the day: your home will stay cooler through the hotter times of the day without using the fan.

Cooling Tips

  • Set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible in the summer, and ensure humidity control if needed. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
  • Consider using an interior fan along with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
  • Avoid placing appliances that give off heat such as lamps or TVs near a thermostat.

    Tax Credit Amount: $50
    Requirements

    Must use no more than 2% of the furnace’s total energy.

  • Air Source Heat Pumps

    Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners in moderate climates. Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space into a warm, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house; during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume.

Rheem Redesigns Hydronic Air Handler, Debuts More Efficient Version

Key component of Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System incorporates new high-efficiency motor—increasing the electrical efficiency of the unit

ATLANTA, April 19, 2012—Rheem today launched a newly redesigned hydronic air handler, which is an important element of the Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System. Now available in the United States and Canada, the updated Rheem Hydronic Air Handler incorporates a new, high-efficiency permanent magnet motor, which helps upgrade the electrical efficiency of the air handler.

Powered by Tankless Technology, the Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System provides a unique and highly efficient way to heat both the air and water in a home—while also being compatible with Rheem air conditioners and heat pumps. When a Rheem tankless gas water heater is matched with the hydronic air handler, hot water is circulated through the air handler and is then re-circulated back to the tankless water heater. This pairing of products provides a soft, comfortable heat to the home while maintaining comfortable humidity levels regardless of the climate.

“In the recent down economy, we’ve seen savvy mechanical contractors and plumbers identify new avenues for business. The Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System has become a go-to product for mechanical contractors to enter the tankless water heating space and for plumbers to enter the residential heating market,” said Sal Brunetto, corporate national accounts manager, Rheem. “Now that we’ve upgraded the efficiency of the Rheem Hydronic Air Handler’s motor, timing is ripe for other contractors and plumbers to use this product to expand offerings and, ultimately, increase business.”

The redesigned Rheem Hydronic Air Handler is AHRI-certified and can meet ENERGY STAR® qualifications when paired with certain Rheem high efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps to create a home comfort system. When this air handler is paired with the Rheem Prestige™ Series Condensing Tankless Water Heater, which operates at 94 percent efficiency, the space-heating portion of the system will be just as efficient, and the resulting system is comparable to a 90+ percent efficient furnace. Also, the air handler utilizes an 11 to 100 percent combustion modulation formula for precise temperature control. Inherent to tankless water heaters, combustion modulation technology electronically increases or decreases the burner’s flame size to match the homeowner’s temperature needs.

Additional features of the Rheem Hydronic Air Handler include:

  • A low profile, 34-inch design, which makes the unit lighter and easier to handle;
  • an easy-access panel so contractors can remove one service panel and access the blower, which houses the controls, motor and blower;
  • an insulated blower compartment—making it one of the quietest hydronic air handlers available today;
  • an integrated control board with diagnostics that manage all operational functions of the unit; the control board also provides hook-ups for a humidifier and an electronic air cleaner; and
  • no gas or vent connections, which leads to greater installation flexibility and lower installation costs.

The Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System is also ideal for climates where heat pump systems are frequently used. It’s proven to be popular in states like California, which places a tremendous focus on energy conservation and efficiency. In 2012, California’s South Coast Air Quality Management Department (SCAQMD) implemented a new rule that reduces the NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions allowed from tankless water heaters to 14 nanograms per Joule of heat output. Rheem offers a comprehensive selection of tankless water heaters that meet SCAQMD’s new requirement, making the Rheem Integrated Heating & Water Heating System an efficient heating and water heating option for California-based homeowners.

Rheem will continue to enhance the features and technology associated with the Rheem Hydronic Air Handler throughout the next year.

For more information on the Rheem Hydronic Air Handler, please visit http://www.rheem.com. Contractors using Rheem’s Apple iPad app® can also find information regarding the air handler on the app.

On Thursday, April 12, PROSTOCK and Hughes Supply hosted a grand opening event for contractors in the McDonough area. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and also featured a catered lunch from Atlanta’s famous drive-in, The Varsity. Hughes Supply conducted a grand-prize drawing at the event, where one lucky contractor won a new Apple iPad®, and the company also provided giveaways to attendees.
A number of company representatives from Hughes Supply participated in the grand opening event, including Steve Ferry, Hughes Supply division president; Brad Davis, regional manager, Georgia; Dennis Williams, southeast HVAC business manager; Brian Wisener, manager, McDonough; Xavier Patillo, counter/PROSTOCK manager; Rick Partridge, outside sales; and Terrance Hayes, logistical sales. Beth Childress, manager of store development for PROSTOCK, and Mike Himel, Rheem’s southeast district parts manager, traveled to Georgia to attend the event.
“We had a tremendous turnout among customers in McDonough and the surrounding areas at our grand opening event,” added Brian Wisener. “Our contractor customers were especially pleased with the crisp layout of the PROSTOCK store. Of course, they loved the catered lunch by The Varsity too! All around, it was a great day.”
The McDonough store is located at 120 Westridge Industrial Boulevard, and it is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. More information can be found on Hughes Supply’s website, http://www.hughessupply.com.

Rheem Furnace Wins Innovation Award

ATLANTA (NOV. 23, 2011) — The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); and the International Exposition Company (IEC), producers and organizers of the AHR Expo, have honored Rheem with a 2012 AHR Expo Innovation Award. The recently launched Rheem XR90 Extreme Recovery Gas Water Heater earned this esteemed honor in the award competition’s plumbing category.

The AHR Innovation Awards honor the most innovative new products that will be showcased during the annual AHR Expo, which is the largest HVACR exposition and conference in the world. A panel of judges made up of ASHRAE members evaluated products submitted in 10 different categories based on innovation, application, value to the user and market impact. The plumbing category includes any product or tool used to conserve water, or to direct, distribute or increase the flow of water.

“The Rheem XR90 is truly a one-of-a-kind water heater that has the power to substantially impact the market,” said Peter Reynolds, general manager, Rheem Water Heating division. “The fact is, the Rheem XR90 delivers more hot water, faster and more efficiently than a standard, 50-gallon gas water heater*. We’re so honored that the judging panel from ASHRAE recognized the unit’s innovation and Rheem’s product leadership.”

Launched in July 2011, the 29-gallon Rheem XR90 Extreme Recovery Gas Water Heater heats water 42 percent faster than a standard 50-gallon gas water heater. The Rheem XR90 costs approximately 17 percent less to operate annually: only $261 versus $315 per year** for a standard 50-gallon gas model. What’s more, it has a first hour rating (FHR) of 90 gallons—meaning homeowners get three times the amount of hot water in an hour than what the tank actually holds. By comparison, a standard 40-gallon gas water heater*** has an FHR of 67 gallons.

Once the Rheem XR90 has been depleted of its available hot water, the unit can be ready with 90 gallons of available hot water in only 29 minutes. A standard 40-gallon gas water heater not only runs out of hot water faster, but this unit takes 59 minutes to be ready with 67 gallons of available hot water.
